What to put on a contractor invoice
Contractors often progress-bill: a deposit, a draw at milestones, and a final invoice on completion. Keep labor and materials on separate lines and add your tax number if you charge sales tax.
Example line items for contractor work:
- Labor — 24 hrs @ $65
- Materials (lumber, fixtures) — 1 @ $1,840
- Change order: extra outlet — 1 @ $220
Every complete invoice also needs your details, the client’s, a unique invoice number, dates, and clear payment terms — see the full invoice checklist, or read how to invoice a client.
Frequently asked questions
How do contractors usually invoice?
In stages — a deposit to start, progress draws at agreed milestones, and a final invoice on completion. Reference the contract or estimate number on each.
Do I separate labor and materials?
Yes. Separate lines (and often separate tax treatment) make the invoice easy to approve and clean at tax time.
